It has been two months since a boom of online education triggered by the epidemic in China. At present, we are keeping focus on how to optimize our online class. In the case of chemistry laboratory courses, there's not much that can be done to experimental operations through online teaching. While for the traditional teaching procedure, there is still room for improvement in terms of integrating research to teaching, interactivity, etc. This paper will present some design strategies for improving teaching the organic chemistry laboratory online. To be specific, it describes how teaching materials like the lesson plan and virtual lab were coordinated into the online teaching. And we will also discuss the holistic approach to a better outcome for students' active learning and integration research into teaching by redesigning multiple phases, such as the pre-laboratory preparation, live online class, experimental operations.     

Purification of low-abundance lysozyme in egg white via free-flow electrophoresis with gel-filtration chromatography

As an effective separation tool, free-flow electrophoresis has not been used for purification of low-abundance protein in complex sample matrix. Herein, lysozyme in complex egg white matrix was chosen as the model protein for demonstrating the purification of low-content peptide via an FFE coupled with gel fitration chromatography (GFC). The crude lysozyme in egg while was first separated via free-flow zone electrophoresis (FFZE). After that, the fractions with lysozyme activity were condensed via lyophilization. Thereafter, the condensed fractions were further purified via a GFC of Sephadex G50. In all of the experiments, a special poly(acrylamide- co-acrylic acid) (P(AM-co-AA)) gel electrophoresis and a mass spectrometry were used for identification of lysozyme. The conditions of FFZE were optimized as follows: 130 μL/min sample flow rate, 4.9 mL/min background buffer of 20 mM pH 5.5 Tris-Acetic acid, 350 V, and 14 °C as well as 2 mg/mL protein content of crude sample. It was found that the purified lysozyme had the purity of 80% and high activity as compared with its crude sample with only 1.4% content and undetectable activity. The recoveries in the first and second separative steps were 65% and 82%, respectively, and the total recovery was about 53.3%. The reasons of low recovery might be induced by diffusion of lysozyme out off P(AM-co-AA) gel and co-removing of high-abundance egg ovalbumin. All these results indicated FFE could be used as alternative tool for purification of target solute with low abundance.     

3D Electron Diffraction Unravels the New Zeolite ECNU-23 from the “Pure” Powder Sample of ECNU-21

A novel crystalline high-silica zeolite with 12×8-membered ring (R) channel system is prepared with the aid of the 3D electron diffraction (3D ED) technique. A crystal with the same topology as one of the predicted daughter structures of CIT-13 germanosilicate, named ECNU-23 (East China Normal University 23) was coincidentally detected by the 3D ED investigation during the structure characterization of the “pure” powder sample of existing one-dimension (1D) 10-R ECNU-21. By controlling the alkaline-assisted hydrolysis under moderate conditions, we purified the phase of ECNU-23 by selectively breaking and removing the chemically weak Ge(Si)-O-Ge and metastable Si-O-Si bonds. Its structure was determined based on the 3D ED data, and confirmed by high-resolution TEM images and powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) data. The aluminosilicate Al-ECNU-23 shows unique catalytic properties in the isomerization/ disproportionation of m-xylene as solid-acid catalyst.

光捕获系统在自然界光合作用过程中起着至关重要的作用.模拟自然界的光捕获体系,在生物成像、发光器件、光催化以及解决人类面临的能源问题等方面均具有重要意义[1].目前,在水相中构筑高效的人工光捕获系统已取得一系列重要进展[2].然而,为了更好地理解并模拟自然界中以多通道信息通讯为特征的捕光天线系统[3],构筑具有多步连续能量转移特征并能实现光能到化学能转化的人工光捕获体系仍然是一项具有挑战性的工作.     

Salicylaldimine-bridged dinuclear cyclopalladated complexes: Synthesis,characterization and BSA binding studies

Salicylaldimine-bridged dinuclear cyclopalladated complexes were synthesized by the reactions of cyclopalladated chloro dimers [Pd{(4-R)C₆H₃CH=N-C₆H₃–2,6-i-Pr₂}(μ-Cl)]₂ (R = H; OMe) with salen-based bridging ligands. The complexes were characterized by FTIR, NMR spectroscopy, elemental analysis and X-ray crystallography. The binding interaction of cyclopalladated complexes to bovine serum albumin (BSA) was investigated by UV–vis, fluorescence and synchronous fluorescence spectroscopy. The experimental results showed that these Pd (II) complexes could bind to BSA with high affinity and quench its intrinsic fluorescence by a static or combined process. Also the interaction of Pd complexes with BSA affected the conformation of the tryptophan and tyrosine residues.

Nanosized Carbon Macrocycles Based on a Planar Chiral Pseudo Meta-[2.2]Paracyclophane

Structural designs combining cycloparaphenylenes (CPPs) backbone with planar chiral [2.2]paracyclophane ([2.2]PCP) lead to optical-active chiral macrocycles with intriguing properties. X-ray crystal analysis revealed aesthetic necklace-shaped structures and size-dependent packages with long-range channels. The macrocycles exhibit unique photophysical properties with high fluorescence quantum yield of up to 82 %, and the fluorescent color varies with ring size. In addition, size-dependent chiroptical properties with moderately large CPL dissymmetry factor of 10⁻³ and CPL brightness in the range of 30–40 M⁻¹ cm⁻¹ were observed.
